    BROADSHEETS AND TABLOIDS En el Reino Unido se utilizan los términos broadsheet y tabloid para referirse tanto a dos formatos distintos de periódicos como a dos géneros diferentes de prensa. Dado que la prensa seria empleaba tradicionalmente el formato grande, broadsheet se convirtió en sinómino de calidad y seriedad en la información. Por otro lado, la prensa más popular empleaba el formato tabloide, más pequeño, con lo que el término tabloids se asociaba a las noticias sensacionalistas, los escándalos y los cotilleos de la prensa rosa. En la actualidad, la mayor parte de los periódicos de calidad británicos han adoptado también el formato más pequeño, pero debido a las connotaciones negativas o sensacionalistas que todavía tiene la palabra tabloid, la prensa seria prefiere definir su nuevo formato como compact (compacto). En Estados Unidos, el término standard-sized newspapers es el equivalente a broadsheet.
